Qualitative transcription turns spoken interviews or group discussions into written text that can be reviewed, coded and quoted. It is common for FGDs, key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, phone interviews, user testing sessions and programme feedback discussions.
A useful transcript is not just words typed from audio. The transcriber must follow the agreed format, identify speakers where possible, mark unclear sections and preserve the meaning of the conversation. For research work, careless transcription can distort findings, especially when local terms, mixed languages or technical issues are involved.
